How did you get connected with the Pamela Trokanski Dance Theatre? Why did you join PTDT’s board?

I became aware of the board when I started dancing for PTDT in the main company in 2009.  After a little while, Pamela asked me if I would be interested in serving on the board as well and it seemed like a good opportunity for me to share my skills, learn more about the arts community, and see how a dance company runs.

Which program that PTDT offers are you most excited or passionate about?

The notion that everyone can dance is fairly radical, so I love that we follow through and serve the full spectrum of our community from elementary school to retirees.  KORE, Dance for Parkinsons, Second Wind, Dance in Public Places, Dance in Concert… all are so important.

How do you use your specific skill set in your work as a PTDT board member?

Mostly I use my organizing skills and my inability to let go of a good idea.  My biggest contribution to the board the last few years has been running our Big Day of Giving campaign.  In 2014 I heard about the event and thought we should see if we could participate the next year, so I stalked their website until they had updated info for 2015 (I actually had a reminder at the top of my calendar pages to check each month).  Now we’re entering our fourth year and although it’s a lot of work, it’s worth it because the funds we raise support our incredible programs.
I also have technology skills that are pretty unique on our board.  I have experience in graphic design, video/audio editing, and web design.  I run our social media accounts and website, which comes in handy for the Big Day of Giving stuff.  Join us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!
Oh yeah… and I’m also a PTDT dancer.  It really helps when we’re planning show dates and community work to have a person in the room who can speak for the dancers’ needs.

What is your advice to people who want to become more involved?

Your time makes a huge difference to any nonprofit but especially for PTDT.  For example, you give a couple of hours to usher at a show and that means PTDT can offer a full theater experience.  You give a couple of hours at a board meeting, and we’ve planned out season dates, reviewed a budget, and discussed potential new community connections.  You volunteer your accounting skills and we have new ways to understand our budget so we can better serve our community.  Really, it doesn’t take a lot to make a big difference.

What is your current favorite dance YouTube video?

I really enjoyed Sara Mearns’ You Tube video blog posts.  She gives you an inside look into the life of a professional dancer at a world renown company.
